Within the system of the Tao, the eight Trigrams represent different stages of energy as Yin and Yang constantly dance with each other trying to find harmony and balance. They are, fundamentally, the energetic building blocks of our world.

Originally yarrow stalks were used to cast each of the three lines that make up the Trigram but, nowadays, coins are more commonly used. In casting, two Trigrams are built and combined to make a Hexagram of six lines. Each Hexagram has a meaning based on the combination of the energy in the two Trigrams. But, even more than that, each line has a meaning and its position within the Hexagram has a meaning. In fact, there are so many layers to the I Ching that its study could be considered a lifelong ambition!
As there are eight trigrams there are a possible sixty-four hexagrams. Each one can be meditated upon and considered as a whole or line by line to bring insight and guidance to the seeker. The I Ching can give guidance on your situation, on any questions you have or decisions you wish to make. It can also provide a forecast based on your date of birth very much like an astrological chart.
